When Peter realizes the last of the hive survived and everyone in the building is in danger, he falls naturally into selfless heroism. Hyperion saves him and flies off to the next threat. Always in the wrong place at the wrong time, his "Parker Luck" finds him when at random the Hive of Annihilation heads straight for him. He's asked to take pictures one last time and heads to the roof. He floats aimlessly through life until a pep talk from Uncle Ben leads him to the decision to quit his job at the Bugle. His job is to take pictures of the very superhumans he despises. To support Uncle Ben, Peter drops out of college and gets a job at the Daily Bugle. In an unchallenging battle against a G-list villain, Hyperion throws a billboard and unintentionally kills May in a nearby building. She dies from a careless act of excessive force by Marvel's Superman analogue Hyperion. Worse yet, Peter witnesses her death firsthand and is powerless to stop it. Uncle Ben survives but Aunt May does not. ![]() This can be seen in both Heroes Reborn #2 by Jason Aaron, Dale Keown, Carlos Magno and Ed McGuinness and Heroes Reborn: Peter Parker, The Amazing Shutterbug by Marc Bernadin and Rafael De Latorre. He's bullied relentlessly and never finds his way to a relationship with Mary Jane. Yet the Peter of the Heroes Reborn universe seems to suffer from "Parker Luck" even worse. You'd think skipping becoming a superhero would improve Peter's general luck. Related: Gwen Stacy Becomes Marvel's Batman's Batgirl (Yes, Really) It spans from the mundane like bullying to the outrageous like clone drama and having his body taken over by Doc Ock. Making matters even more tragic, Gwen Stacy's death was a direct result of Spider-Man's attempt to save her. In his teenage years, his uncle Ben was shot and killed. When he was six, his parents died in a plane crash. All in all, an okay read, but nothing amazing.For the original Spider-Man (before history was rewritten in Heroes Reborn), bad luck started early. The art style is actually quite enjoyable, and probably my favorite aspect of this particular issue. The story is fine, although I was dissatisfied with the ending. Heroes Reborn is all about letting Marvel’s parody of DC have a moment to shine, and this story centers on a normal Peter Parker and Hyperion, a Superman-esque hero. All told, I’m not sure Heroes Reborn: Peter Parker the Amazing Shutterbug really makes good use of the setting. In my opinion alternate universe stories can be some of the most impactful and insightful tales because they fall outside of the boundaries of continuity, meaning they can go whatever direction best suits the story. A great play upon the classic line that bears a resemblance to its writer's love for the thematic crux of one of his favorite Spider-Man stories, "Into the Spider-Verse." Anyone can wear the mask, anyone. Lastly, I love the line given by Ben to Peter amidst their argument in the park, "You don't have to have great power to do great things. ![]() I would most definitely recommend listening to John Paesano's score for Marvel's Spider-Man Game to capture that hopeful array of wonder and dewy undertones. Ron Lim and Rafael De Latorre's artwork captures that rooted in urban New York style with the classic Marvel treatment. A welcomed bit of "what-if?" storytelling that hymns with the rhythm of a busy city. ![]()
